WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — With the Women’s World Cup just a few days away, some of the injured players on England’s national soccer team were treated like royalty at Wimbledon on Saturday.Fran Kirby, Beth Mead and Leah Williamson were all in the Royal Box on Centre Court to watch some tennis on Day 6 — the traditional day when sports greats are invited to the All England Club. All three won the Women’s European Championship last year but will miss this year’s World Cup tournament in Australia and New Zealand because of injuries.Another member of last year’s winning soccer team, Jill Scott, was also in the Royal Box. She retired from the sport a few months after England beat Germany 2-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium.Plenty of tennis greats were among the guests Saturday, including Billie Jean King, Rosie Casals, Stefan Edberg and Sue Barker. But athletes and former greats from other sports were there as well, like gymnasts, field hockey players and rug...Texas police find 6 people injured after shooting at El Paso party, updated news report says

BERLIN (AP) — German police said several officers were injured and dozens of people were detained Saturday during unrest at an Eritrean cultural event in the western city of Giessen.Police said bottles were thrown and smoke bombs were ignited as people tried to tear down barricades around the festival venue.About 1,000 officers, a water cannon and helicopters are deployed in the city, which is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Frankfurt. Police spokesman Christopher Pfaff urged the public to avoid the center of Giessen while the operation is ongoing.Authorities had tried to ban the festival after similar unrest linked to political differences within the Eritrean community occurred there last year, but a court overturned the order.Tens of thousands have fled Eritrea for Europe, many alleging they were mistreated by the autocratic government of Isaias Afwerki.SourceDylan Crews and Paul Skenes could go 1-2 in the MLB Draft. Still, the Pirates might throw a curve

LSU outfielder Dylan Crews is, according to Tigers coach Jay Johnson, “the perfectly built baseball player.”Power. Speed. Defense. Smarts. There is little Johnson believes Crews can’t do.“He’s the best college hitter I’ve ever seen,” Johnson said.Such are the riches Johnson and LSU enjoyed this year on the way to the national title that for all of Crews’ singular talent, depending on who you ask Crews might not even be the best major league prospect on his team. Having a pitcher who hits triple digits with alarming regularity and remarkable ease will do that.Paul Skenes spent the last six months lighting radar guns with impressive fastballs, making a compelling case that he’s the most major-league-ready college pitcher since Stephen Strasburg more than a decade ago.Crews and Skenes have been the consensus top two picks for months.Yet the consensus won’t matter when the Pittsburgh Pirates are on the clock Sunday night in Seattle with the firs...Sports on TV for Sunday, July 9

TBILISI — Georgia’s annual LGBT+ Pride event was evacuated by the police on Saturday after hundreds of counter-protesters stormed the site.In a statement, organisers of the festival in the capital of Tbilisi announced that they had been forced to shut down the annual festivities after the authorities failed to maintain the perimeter.“Today’s developments indicate that today’s planned events were pre-coordinated and agreed upon between the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the violent group Alt-Info,” Tbilisi Pride said. The interim deputy minister of internal affairs, Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, said that “the pride festival was to take place in an open territory” and therefore authorities were “unable to provide protection.”Smoke rose above the site, a field just outside the city, as LGBT+ rainbow flags were burned and right-wing activists danced to traditional Georgian folk music. Attendees had been told to board buses for safety moments before.Reacting to the attacks, the Briti...Victor Wembanyama scores nine points on shaky San Antonio Spurs debut

(CNN) — Not since LeBron James entered the NBA has there been so much hype surrounding a new prospect and fans finally got the chance to see French sensation Victor Wembanyama in a San Antonio Spurs jersey for the first time. However, it’s fair to say the reality of ‘Wemby’s’ Spurs debut didn’t quite match the expectation as the 19-year-old finished with just nine points on 15.4% shooting in the Spurs’ 76-68 win over the Charlotte Hornets. But there were still flashes of the incredible talent that has already made Wembanyama a household name, in particular with his vision and passing, while there was one incredible block on a three-point attempt by Brandon Miller – the Hornets’ No. 2 overall pick in the draft – that showcased his remarkable defensive potential.Wembanyama acknowledged it was a difficult first night for him but called his debut a “special moment.”“It was really special to wear that jersey for the first time,” Wembanyama said. “It’s rea...Warm and humid weekend with isolated storm chances
