JERUSALEM (AP) — The contradictions that make up Israel — its economic and military prowess and its deep divisions and rancorous politics — were on full display Tuesday as the country mourned its fallen soldiers and began celebrating its 75th Independence Day. The jarring transition from Israel’s Memorial Day to its landmark anniversary ceremony, meant to be a stunning display of unity that transcends the usual noise of Israeli politics, came as the country faces one of the gravest crises in its history. The events reflected the troubles of a nation preoccupied not only with its external enemies but with its internal conflicts.A plan by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government to overhaul the judiciary has stoked widespread discontent and spurred weeks of protests that have brought cities to a standstill. Critics fear the changes would weaken the Supreme Court and erode the country’s democratic character. Netanyahu and his supporters argue the overhaul is...Denver weather: Evening rain, snow for Palmer Divide, foothills

LOVELAND SKI AREA, Colo. (KDVR) -- Loveland Ski Area started the lifts Tuesday morning with 4 inches of fresh snowfall overnight and more snow on the way. "We could see up to a foot of fresh snow for tomorrow morning," said John Sellers, the Marketing Director Loveland Ski Area. The Pinpoint Weather team is forecasting a snowstorm to blow into Colorado Tuesday and Sellers said they are excited for all the snow. He said Loveland Ski Area's location is a total bonus. "Our elevation helps us a lot. Right here at the base, we are at 10,800 feet, so we can hold snow all season," Sellers said. Despite Colorado often experiencing spring snowstorms, Sellers said the ski area usually sets its closing date for the first week of May. He said there have been only a few seasons when the ski area has stayed open into mid-May. The reason for that closing date is so they can start getting ready for summer projects on the mountain. The Worcester City Council is considering a proposal that could increase police officer paychecks with a new incentive based on officers wearing body cameras. The council is scheduled to meet Tuesday night to vote on the proposed $1,300 annual stipend to each officer using the new cameras. The meeting is scheduled to begin around 6:30 p.m. and is expected to be divisive. “I think it’s important that people realize there is extra work here and it’s a change,” said Worcester City Councilor and Public Safety Chair Kate Toomey.Toomey said several towns and cities have offered similar compensation to police who agree to wear the cameras. “These men and women are putting their lives on the line everyday when they leave their home out on the street,” she said. “With an average pay of $77,000 for a patrolman, I don’t think that an extra $1,300 a year is outrageous for the added work they have to do. It benefits everyone.”The Worcester Police Department rolled out its bod...Latest news
