Caltech opens doors to students from schools without calculus, physics, chemistry

The California Institute of Technology has long been one of the most selective schools in the country, boasting an admission rate of only 3% last year, according to the Los Angeles Times. It's something the school embraces, highlighting that "Caltech is hard" on the school's webpage listing academic requirements for applicants. For some gifted applicants, however, what was already a daunting prospect was truly impossible, as Caltech refused to admit students who did not take physics, calculus and chemistry, even if their schools did not offer those classes. But Thursday, the Pasadena school announced a new pathway for students who weren't offered the chance to take those classes, according to the Times. Those students can take and score highly on Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or some other certification tests, including by taking and passing free online classes through Khan Academy to prove their mastery of the subjects. The change could affect a large number of teens, ...

The Ghost and the Machine: Allen Ginsberg from Page to Camera to Metaverse

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 23:42:34 GMT

A new exhibition at Fahey/Klein Gallery asks us to consider the iconic Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in a new light — several new lights, actually. Beloved for his evocative, sparsely opulent, raw and refined words on the American soul and his personal status as a counterculture touchstone, Ginsberg was also periodically enamored of photography. First in the 1950s and again in the 1980s, the poet supplemented the observational portraiture and love of rebellious, enigmatic characters found on his pages for that which might be found behind a camera’s lens.Allen Ginsberg: Patti Smith & William S. You still won’t find them on Spotify or any digital platform because, as lead singer Ron says, he “travels back and forth in the time-space continuum in a wormhole” and likes to keep things old school. Their debut album, Drive-thru Metal, only comes in vinyl form and it is cleverly wrapped in a colorful, collectible pop-up book. There’s also a coloring book with flexi disc for their “Paranoid”-inspired single “Pa...
