The New York Jets re-signed durable center Connor McGovern on Monday, addressing one of the team’s major needs before the NFL draft this week.McGovern has been the Jets’ starting center the past three seasons, starting 48 games and missing only two since signing as a free agent in 2020. Contract terms weren’t immediately available. The Jets have the No. 13 overall pick in the draft, which begins Thursday night, along with Nos. 42 and 43 in the second round. While offensive tackle remains the likely target with its first pick, New York was thought to be interested in the top centers with one of its second-rounders — if they don’t include one or both in a potential trade with Green Bay for quarterback Aaron Rodgers.Rodgers announced in March during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on YouTube and Sirius XM his intention is to continue playing — and for the Jets. New York and Green Bay continue to work on a deal that would send the four-time NFL MVP to the J...White House: US ‘facilitating the departure of Americans’ who want to leave Sudan amid widespread fighting

LA JUNTA, Colo. (KDVR) — For the first time in Colorado, a bat has been infected with a deadly disease known as white-nose syndrome. On March 29, the National Park Service staff at Bent's Old Fort Historic Site outside of La Junta found an adult female Yuma bat on the ground and unable to fly. The bat had a white powdery substance on its forearms and had to be euthanized. What to expect from Tuesday, Wednesday’s snowstorm Lab tests from the U.S. Geological Survey National Wildlife Health Center confirmed the bat tested positive for Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome.“We are working with our partners to monitor these and other bat colonies. Scientists around the world are searching for vaccines and treatments and many actions have already been taken to help conserve bats, minimize the spread and impact of white-nose syndrome and to minimize other sources of mortality for vulnerable bat species. We will implement the most effective measures to e...Top rated cinnamon rolls in Colorado

A Homestead woman is behind bars after, police said, she left two children alone at the beach including one who had to be saved from nearly drowning. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, 28-year-old Yavelin Fernandez left her 3-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son alone on the beach at Gilbert’s Resort in Key Largo. Deputies said officials were called to the scene after the girl had to be pulled from the water by a Good Samaritan. The girl, according to officials, was not wearing any flotation devices and appeared to be drowning on a security video. After a brief search, deputies were able to locate Fernandez who appeared to be intoxicated. Officials said she also became belligerent and yelled at deputies. Fernandez was arrested and charged with child neglect.STEM students visit Port Everglades for USS Cole tour

As Fleet Week entered its opening days, STEM students in Fort Lauderdale sailed into new territory on Monday as they toured the USS Cole and learned about the workload of a sailor.“We’ve got electricians, we got people that can weld, we got people who work on sophisticated equipment, fiber-optics,” said Commander James Welsch. The tour may encourage the students to work on a ship in the future.“They’re interacting with those sailors, about what they do every day and how important science and technology education is really, really important for us,” Welsch said. It’s a unique opportunity in more ways than one.“This entire area we’re sitting in is actually part of American history. All of this was actually destroyed,” said Senior Chief Marcelo Baquero-Álvarez.The ship, which was commissioned in Port Everglades in the late ’90s, survived a terrorist attack in Yemen on Oct. 12, 2000.Although 17 sailors were lost in that at...Heavy downpours cause flooding in Aventura, thunderstorm watch issued for parts of Broward County

Heavy downpours were dumped in areas that have been already saturated by days of rain.A 7News camera captured deep water at a gas station in Aventura, at about 186th Avenue, near Dixie Highway, Monday afternoon. Flooding in these areas caused street closures and traffic delays. And it wasn’t just Aventura. Heavy rain came down in Northwest Miami-Dade and Miami Shores was far from dry.The heavy downpours started at around 9 a.m., which led to street flood advisories for several areas in Miami-Dade County, which have since expired. Back in Aventura shoppers loaded groceries. “It takes a long time for the puddles, for the puddles to go down,” Jessica said. “They don’t have the right way of bringing down the water.”Apparently, pumps are there to help move the water, but it looks like it flows right back into the parking lot.The South Florida rainy season is well underway. If heavy rains weren’t already a problem, the National Weather Service said res...Portland’s Valentine’s Day Bandit revealed in death

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The identity of the so-called Valentine’s Day bandit, responsible for leaving hundreds of red hearts in downtown Portland for more than four decades, has been revealed in death.Kevin Fahrman, of Falmouth, was chief instigator of a group of feel-good pranksters who struck every year on Feb. 14, family and friends said, a tradition that put smiles on people’s faces while leaving behind an enduring mystery of who was responsible. He was 67 when died on Friday.Portland Mayor Kate Snyder said it was sad to lose such a local treasure “and bittersweet to have him revealed.”“The Valentine’s Day bandit has given so much to the Portland community. His gift of love was anticipated by so many each February. I hope the tradition continues — it would be a wonderful tribute to someone who brought love and hope to all of us annually,” the mayor said. The love and levity started in the mid-1970s before Fahrman took it over in 1979.Over the years, simple white sheets of pa...Why the northern and southern lights appear to be so active right now

(CNN) — The breathtaking dancing shimmer of the aurora borealis and its counterpart in the southern hemisphere, aurora australis, dazzles those lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Earth’s greatest light show. The northern and southern lights, which are usually confined to the Arctic and Antarctica, have generated awe and wonder for centuries. In recent months, photographers and night sky watchers have been capturing the colorful display further south (or north if you’re in the southern hemisphere) than usual — places like the state of Colorado, the southeast of England and New South Wales. Pilots have circled their planes mid-flight to give their passengers a closer look at the phenomenon.A new solar event over the weekend caused colorful auroras Sunday night and Monday morning, and more can be expected Monday night, according to EarthSky.Auroras may be visible as far south as Alabama and northern California, according to NOAA...Millions face a late-season spring chill, others brace for flooding and another round of severe weather

(CNN) — If you follow seasons by the meteorological calendar, we are halfway through spring, but if you look at the forecast this week, it seems like anything but. A huge spring chill will impact a large chunk of the country this week, dropping temperatures well below normal and even bringing the potential for a handful of record lows.“After 4 consecutive days with temperature departures of +20 to +30F mid-month, the stagnant cool pattern of late should mean April ends below normal for most,” the National Weather Service office in the Twin Cities said, speaking about the Upper Midwest.Monday morning, Indianapolis tied a record low temperature after a morning start of just 28 degrees. Just four days ago, Indianapolis nearly tied a record high temperature, missing it by only 1 degree. Many cities are bracing for a similar swing in temperature extremes in the coming days. The cold will spread south and east this week, where millions could see temperatures well...Latest news
