You don’t normally think of roses during winter, unless it’s the Rose Parad in California! Making a debut at this epic parade is the city of Fort Lauderdale.Alexander Star rose to the occasion and will be singing on Broward County’s float on New Year’s Day. ATLANTA (AP) — Florida State’s Mike Norvell has won the Dodd Trophy as national coach of the year after leading the Seminoles to a 13-0 record.The No. 4 Seminoles will play No. 6 Georgia in Saturday’s Orange Bowl.The award announced Friday honors scholarship, leadership and integrity, as well as success on the field. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google has agreed to settle a $5 billion privacy lawsuit alleging that it spied on people who used the “incognito” mode in its Chrome browser — along with similar “private” modes in other browsers — to track their internet use.The class-action lawsuit filed in 2020 said Google misled users into believing that it wouldn’t track their internet activities while using incognito mode. It argued that Google’s advertising technologies and other techniques continued to catalog details of users’ site visits and activities despite their use of supposedly “private” browsing.Plaintiffs also charged that Google’s activities yielded an “unaccountable trove of information” about users who thought they’d taken steps to protect their privacy.The settlement, reached Thursday, must still be approved by a federal judge. Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Fairhaven on Friday night that left an officer injured and a suspect dead, officials announced.Officers responding to a report of an intoxicated male at 125 Sconticut Neck Road around 5 p.m. when shots were exchanged between the male and officers, according to the Fairhaven Police Department.The male, whose name has not been released, was killed.A responding officer was wounded and taken to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries.In a statement, New Bedford Mayor Job Mitchell said, “This evening’s fatal shooting in Fairhaven was tragic in every sense. SAN DIEGO -- A victim and suspect have been identified after a deadly stabbing Tuesday in San Marcos, authorities said.Angela Marie Lanway, 42, was announced as the deceased, Lt. Joseph Jarjura with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said in a news release Friday. Ziyah Jay Patterson, 29, was arrested on suspicion of murdering Lanway and booked into the Vista Detention Facility.On the evening of Dec. 26, a stabbing was reported in the 100 block of N. Twin Oaks Valley Rd., according to law enforcement. Orca sightings have surged in SoCal. Kathy Hochul has again vetoed legislation that would have changed the state’s wrongful death statute by letting families recover damages for emotional suffering from the death of a loved one.Hochul declined Friday to sign the Grieving Families Act for the second time this year. In a veto memo, the Democrat said she favors changing the statute but the bill lawmakers sent her had the “potential for significant unintended consequences.”Among Hochul’s concerns, she said, were the possibility of increased insurance premiums for consumers and a risk to the financial well-being of public hospitals and other health care facilities.New York is one of just a few states that account only for economic loss in wrongful death lawsuits.
