What is ‘slugging’ and why are more Va. commuters doing it?

More commuters in Virginia’s George Washington Region — also known as Planning District 16 — are “slugging,” according to a recent survey conducted by GWRideConnect, a Fredericksburg-based free ride-sharing service. What is slugging? The term originated in the 1970s, describing a form of carpooling that involves a driver picking up nonpaying passengers at a specific location and dropping them off at a destination that has been agreed upon in advance. In the morning, sluggers gather at locations like park-and-ride facilities or bus stops, and drivers will pull up to the queue for the route they will follow and display or call out their drop-off point and how many passengers they can accommodate. It can be considered a hybrid form of carpooling and hitchhiking, with all parties benefiting from the arrangement, as drivers are able to access HOV lanes with additional passengers, and the riders travel for free.More Va. ‘slugs’ on the roadOn Aug. 8, surveyors co...

Richardson and 3 rivals advance easily through 100-meter heats at worlds

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:01:14 GMT

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Sha’Carri Richardson, Marie-Josée Ta Lou, Shericka Jackson and defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce all won their 100-meter heats at world championships Sunday to stay on course for a showdown in what could be the most unpredictable final of the nine-day track meet. Richardson, the American national champion, crossed the finish line in the day’s fastest time, 10.92 seconds. She pretended to flick some sweat off her brow — no big deal, not that anyone expected that in the first round.Fraser-Pryce, the Jamaican who is seeking to tie a record by winning her sixth world championship in the same event, was slowing down as she crossed the line in 11.01.All in all, it was a low-drama start to what might be the best race of the meet, and a possible preview of more to come at the Paris Olympics next summer.Later on Sunday, American Fred Kerley was set to defend his 100-meter title, with Noah Lyles also in the mix. Lyles, a 200 specialist who is runn...

PHOTOS: Dan Snyder’s Potomac palace is now $14 million more affordable

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:01:14 GMT

As excited as some Washington Commanders fans were about former owner Dan Snyder’s sale of the team last month, nobody seems quite as interested in taking real estate off his hands.Snyder put his 30,000-square-foot Potomac, Maryland mansion up for sale in February, asking a cool $49 million for the property. But this week, the price dropped $14 million. Now, the five-bedroom estate and its 15.2 acres of land can be yours — for just under $35 million. This is not the first time Snyder has tried to shake this residence. He also asked $49 million for it in 2018, but that didn’t seem to work out. Since then, he’s purchased another riverfront mansion — this one for $48 million, located near George Washington’s Mount Vernon in Virginia and a downsize for Snyder with 16,000 square feet of space.Snyder reportedly bought the Potomac mansion for a little over $8.6 million in 2000, from the estate of Jordan’s King Hussein and Queen Noor.Source

Changes Coming to this Week’s Weather

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:01:14 GMT

Some big changes our ahead to our weather pattern this week in South Florida, and it’s mainly about the return of the breeze! It’s been a stagnant and hot summer but with a stronger breeze in place much of this week with sustained winds near 10-20 mph, that will allow for more bearable conditions when it comes to temperatures. Temperatures all week long will hover near 92-93F in Miami after today. This Sunday, we’ll remain under the influence of a departing tropical wave, which is now located over the Gulf of Mexico. Moisture continues to get drawn in from the Atlantic behind this wave, so that will feed in rounds of quick-moving showers and storms at any time today and tonight. Just like we saw on Saturday, it won’t be a washout but there will be that random risk for seeing rain. Now starting Monday, some drier air will start to come in from the Atlantic, and this entire week will feature bouts of drier air filtering into South Florida with high pressure in co...

Solid Summer Sunday

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:01:14 GMT

Well, the lower humidity was apparent yesterday, but unfortunately, the early morning sunshine didn’t last long as clouds filled back in, and stubbornly stuck around. Highs maxed out in the mid to upper 70s. The low humidity kicks off today as well, this time, more or the sunshine does stick around. Although, with that said, we’ll have some clouds mix in as well as some wildfire smoke, allowing for a hazy appearance to the sky at times. It’s not near surface smoke, so I don’t expect it to have a significant impact on air quality. Enough sun gets through to push temps in the lower to mid 80s this afternoon. Humidity does go up tomorrow, and it’ll be very warm with highs in the mid to upper 80s. A few isolated late afternoon/early evening showers/storms are possible (Mainly after 4pm). About 20-30% of us will pick up on one. Those isolated storms are ahead of a cold front that’ll drop temps and humidity by Tuesday morning. Tuesday – Thursday, ...
