ATLANTA (AP) — A federal judge in Atlanta ruled Tuesday that a venture capital firm can continue offering a grant program only to Black women entrepreneurs, saying a lawsuit arguing it illegally excluded other races was not likely to succeed.Senior U.S. Judge Thomas Thrash denied a preliminary injunction that would have blocked the grants by the Atlanta-based Fearless Fund. The judge issued the decision in court after hearing arguments from attorneys and said he planned to issue a written order by the end of the week.The Fearless Fund is a tiny player in the approximately $200 billion global venture capital market, but Tuesday’s ruling was a significant victory for the firm, which has become symbolic of the fight over corporate diversity policies. (AP) — Mississippi announced financial incentives for a shipbuilder to expand in Gulfport in 2020, days after the president of the shipbuilder’s parent company made a $10,000 campaign contribution to Republican Gov. Tate Reeves, records show.Gulf Ship LLC, which received the state incentives, is a division of the Louisiana-based ship company, Edison Chouest Offshore.The president of Edison Chouest Offshore, Gary Chouest, has given $66,000 to Reeves’ campaigns since 2016, including $10,000 on Sept. 2, 2020, according to finance documents.Fifteen days later, the state economic development agency under Reeves’ supervision, the Mississippi Development Authority, announced Gulf Ship would receive state incentives to expand the site it opened in Gulfport in 2006. CHICAGO — A rally was held Tuesday for an 11-year-old girl who was severely injured in an alleged hate crime attack in the city's North Lawndale neighborhood.Trinity Washington and her mother said she was attacked on Sept. 17 outside of their home on the 1900 block of South Spaulding Avenue. Trinity said her neighbor’s sister was outside, inebriated and celebrating Mexican Independence Day. Trinity was with her Yorkie puppy when she said the female called her a racial slur and stepped on the dog. The 11-year-old said the female then hit her in the eye with a bottle and her neighbor punched her in the nose — breaking it. The injuries were serious enough for emergency plastic surgery needed to be performed on Trinity's face. CHICAGO — UPS is looking to hire 3,500 seasonal employees across the Chicago area for the upcoming holiday season.Full and part-time seasonal positions include delivery drivers, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) drivers and package handlers. Seasonal hourly pay rates for package handlers and driver helpers begin at $21 per hour. Driving jobs start at $23 per hour.Permanent positions are also available. ST. LOUIS -- A man was found beaten on the sidewalk in the 3400 block of Montana in south St. Louis in June. Now, Robert Bunger, 43, faces second-degree murder charges in the death of Jordan Harris. Bunger is in jail, with no bond allowed in this case. Cloned voice, fake bondsman target St. Louis woman Police were called to the 3400 block of Montana on June 28 for a report of an assault in progress. They found Harris unresponsive on the sidewalk. He was taken to the hospital and declared deceased the next day.During the investigation, the Medical Examiner’s Office contacted the Homicide Division.
